The story of Nicolas Gentile

After a life-changing medical diagnosis, a man retreats to the countryside and begins building an unlikely place of belonging, grappling with time and the silent urgency of choosing how to live.
“From Palermo to 'Contea Gentile': the documentary that speaks to Tolkien fans.‘

Director's Note
“I wasn't interested in telling a story of overcoming. I was interested in living within uncertainty.”
When I met Nicolas, his project was already taking shape, but what attracted me wasn't what he was building: it was the moment of suspension he was experiencing. A diagnosis had interrupted his sense of time, and instead of seeking answers, he had begun to change his way of inhabiting the present.
As a director, I chose to observe rather than explain. I wanted the film to move at the internal rhythm of Nicolas, leaving the contradictions, pauses, and silences intact.

“"I've counted my years and discovered that I have less time to live from now on than I have lived so far. I feel like that child who won a bag of sweets: he ate the first ones with pleasure, but when he realized there were only a few left, he began to savor them intensely."”
